Maldives to Start a Women's Football League
Football Association of Maldives (FAM) is working to start a women’s football league in the Maldives.
This anouncement was made by the President of FA, Bassam Adeel Jaleel. After winning the election as a presindent for his second term in July 2020, Bassam promised to develop women's football.
Bassam said "during my last term there were no women's football competitions. However in the future FA will host women's football competitions and will focus more to develop women's football".
To achieve this goal FAM has started a financial assistance program called “Towards Future”. Thorough this program all first division clubs will receive nearly 3M Rufiyaa to develop football. According the agreements signed by FAM and eight Premiere League Clubs, each first division club must have a women’s team.
The very first Women's National Football team was formed in 2003. This team played it's first official international match against Myamar on 1 October 2004.
This team falls under the governance of FAM. Since then Maldives have seen great women players such as former national team captian Fadhwa Zahir, former head of women's football at FAM, Mariyam Mayan Mohamed and several others.
Maldives women's national team competed in SAFF Women's Championship in 2016 where they played in the opening against Sri Lanka and won by 5-2.
Women's national team also beat Kuwait by 3-1 in 2016. It was the first ever win for Maldives women's team in a FIFA international friendly game.
Recently women's national team has made history by winning a bronze medal in 13th Asian games held in Nepal. In 2019 the young women's team beats Sri Lanka by 2-1 under the guidance of experienced coach Ahmed Nashid (Naadhu).
