Coronavirus - Tokyo games postponed to 2021
The 2020 Tokyo Olympics has been postponed to 2021 due to the global coronavirus pandemic. The international Olympic committee have now said that the games will most likely be held in 2021.
The decision comes after Canada and Australia said that both nations would boycott the Olympics if it went ahead as planned. It was believed that senior members of the organizing committee and high level officials of the Japanese government wanted the games to go ahead despite the threats of coronavirus.
This marks the first time the Olympics has been cancelled. The 1916 games was not held due to world war 1 breaking out and the 1940 and 1944 games were also not held after world war 2 broke out. Rescheduling the games for 2021 would be a major headache for the Olympics chiefs as the world Athletics championship is scheduled for 2021.
Olympics becomes another sporting victim of coronavirus. The UEFA Euro 2020 has been postponed while a number of other sporting events have been cancelled and put on hold.
