Football Association of Maldives has announced the 27 players squad for the upcoming national fixtures.
This time players from seven different clubs were called up for national duty.
Same as the previous squad, League Champion Maziya Sports & Recreation holds the majority of the squad with 8 players. One goal keeper, two defenders, four midfielders and a striker.
Next in second comes, New Radiant Sports Club with six players. Two defenders, two midfielders, a forward and a goal keeper. It is two players more than last time from blues.
Third goes to Club Eagles, with four from the President Cup Champions. Three midfielders and a goal keeper. In the fourth TC Sports comes with three players, two midfielders and a defender.
Remaining slots of 27 players national squad is filled with, Victory Sports Club, FA Cup Winner Club Valencia and Club Green Streets. Two players from each club. Victory with a goal keeper and a midfielder, while Valencia does with a goal keeper and a defender. And Green Streets with a defender and a striker.
As players were selected according to their recent performances in League and recent national team matches, Akram Abdul Gani from Blues and Ahmed Rasheed from Green are included in the national squad after a long time.
Akram is one of the senior players in the national side and among the regular players. It is believed that in the previous times, he was dropped from the squad due to his low level performances. Ahmed Rasheed was dropped from the national side for the same reason. But it seems as these two player’s improved game in the League, they have regained their spots in the national team roster.
Akram joined the mighty Blues side after lifting the FA Cup with Club Valencia last season even though Valencia played in the AFC Cup play-offs. On the other hand Ahmed Rasheed is showing his top level at the national football stadium once again. It will not be false that his name was not at the scoreboard for a long time. However, with the newly promoted Green Streets, he is back. It was Ahmed Rasheed’s brilliant performance that trashed New Radiant in their last league fixture, where he scored a brace in 10 minutes.
It is believed that Maldives will conduct a training camp in Bangkok before the international friendly game against Afghanistan on 6th June in Dubai, which is played in preparation for the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 Qualifiers against Bhutan on 13th June.
