Maziya a point away from qualification
Maziya beat Abahani limited Dhaka by 2 goals to stay top of the group E and keep hope of an inter-zone play-off semi-finals very much alive. Maziya got even better news when the late kickoff match in the group saw Mohun Bagan win 3-1 against Bengaluru.
With match day 5 over Abahani limited Dhaka wave good bye to the competition and will play for Pride against Mohun Baganin the last match of the group on the 31st of May. Meanwhile Maziya need a point against Bengaluru to confirm their place in the next round.
The first half of the game saw neither able to open up the opposition defense with few open chances for both side.
In a game that came to life in the second half with chances falling to both sides it was Maziya who scored the first goal of the game. A free kick from Mohamed Umair found the bottom corner of the net. This was Umair’s 4th goal of the Asian campaign.
In the 85th minute Aleksandar Rakic’ scored to double Maziya’s advantage. A brilliant through ball from Hassan Shifaz saw Hussain Niyaz Mohamed run into the Area before firing a shot towards Abahani Custodian Shahidhul yousuf who’s saved shot was directed towards the path of Aleksandar Rakic’. He guided the ball into the back of an empty net.
This year’s AFC cup has undoubtedly been Maziya best ever season in Asia and with a big chance of qualification. Green boys currently sit top of group E with 12 points from 5 games. 3 points behind them are Bengaluru who Maziya will face next.
